Overview
The Housing Multiplier Project advances an agenda that solves the U.S. housing shortage faster and more cost effectively while turning housing into a force multiplier for progress.
America is ready to build. That’s why we launched the Housing Multiplier Project to help states and localities get homes built faster and more cost-effectively—and make housing a force multiplier for progress. The momentum is here to solve the housing shortage and bring down the cost of living —from the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act to hundreds of new state and local bills. This is our chance to reimagine where and how we build homes, and to create a more affordable, resilient country.
Recent bipartisan housing reforms share a throughline: They remove the restrictions and barriers that create artificial housing scarcity. Once these strangleholds loosen, opportunities for ingenuity abound. But it’s not a given that the policies that governments enact will be the best policies for getting homes built at the scale, speed, and prices we need. And depending on how we proceed, we may also leave major benefits on the table. That’s where the Housing Multiplier Project’s work begins.
The Project
The Housing Multiplier Project has two objectives: to solve the housing shortage faster and more cost-effectively, and to make housing a force multiplier for household affordability, resilience, grid reliability, pollution reduction, and more.
We focus on high-impact policies that remove barriers to housing production while making effective use of limited public dollars.
Our Goal
Our research shows that it’s possible to produce housing at the scale and speed we need while also lowering housing, transportation, energy, and insurance costs; strengthening state and local fiscal health; making communities more resilient; improving grid reliability; protecting open and working lands; and reducing emissions.
We partner with local, state, and federal leaders to turn our agenda into action.
